Dharan is a lovely small town situated at the foothill of the mighty Himalayas in the Eastern Region of Nepal. This town is one of the most important industrial, economic and educational centres in the region and a gate-way to the eastern hills and mountains of Nepal. Dharan, being situated in the foothills of Siwalik/Chure Mountains, has climate and vegetation a mixture of tropical and sub-tropical.
The population of Dharan Municipality is 1, 25,000. It has mixed ethnicity comprising of Rai, Limbu, Gurung, Magar, Brahmin, Chettry, Newar and others.
Dharan is connected with a domestic airport in Biratnagar, about 50 kilometres south, with a blacktopped road. This road passes through Itahari, 18 kilometer south of Dharan and in the north joins Dhankutta which is about 52 kilometers.
Dharan has many religious places like Budhasubba, Pindeshwor, Baraha Chhetra, Panchakanya, Bishnupaduka and Dantakali, not to be forgotten by the dental professionals. According to Hindu mythology Dantakali is the place where Lord Shiva let the teeth of Sati fall.
A pleasant climatic change can be experienced in Bhedetar, a scenic hill resort, by ascending only 18 kms north. Those interested in white water rafting can experience the serene Tamor and Arun rivers.
