Established along with the medical college in 1994, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology imparts the forensic expertise to the junior residents of the department and the undergraduate students. The PG program was started in 1999. The PG students have regular classes in form of Seminars, Journal Clubs, Small Group Discussions, Autopsies and Expert opinion/ injury report. Researches and Publications form the other dimension of the departmental activity.
The department is involved in day to day medico-legal works including autopsy services, age estimation, Injury/torture reports, Sexual assault reports, Drunkenness, final cause of death and many others. The department aims to establish Digital Forensic Laboratory which would aid for forensic digital photography, computerized age estimation, computerized superimposition and computerized fingerprint comparison analysis. Steps have already been taken to establish separate toxicology laboratory and Forensic pathology. Expansion and upgrading of the current forensic museum is going on.
